At Strawberry & Cream, we are inspired by an old saying that goes along the words:
“Invest well in your shoes and sheets, because if you are not in one you are in the other”.
Your sleep quality is invaluable in contributing towards your emotional and mental well-being. Investing in comfortable, well made and well-designed sheets should be non-negotiable.
We want your bed linen experience to be luxurious and comfortable. This is only possible if the fabric is well made. Quality bed linen is determined by many factors. Thread count is relevant, but not the most important factor. Most retailers use it as a marketing gimmick to promote the superiority of the product. However be cautious, as thread count can be manipulated. A high thread count product can actually be inferior in quality. Below is some guidance to help you make an informed decision when buying any quality bed linen – whether from us or elsewhere.
Never settle for less than 100% cotton
Cheap bed linen is usually made from a polyester and cotton mix. Polyester is created from plastic and treated with harmful chemicals that impact both your skin and the environment. It’s not breathable either, so it traps body odour, and makes you sleep hotter – in addition to presenting a breeding ground for bacteria to thrive in.
Buy bed linen made from at least 60s Yarn “Long Staple” cotton
Knowing the staple length and yarn count is important when buying bed linen. Bed linen made from long staple cotton fibres, of a high yarn count, will give a smooth and luxurious fabric feel. Bedlinen made from a yarn count of less than 40, should be avoided as it will be of poor quality.
Yarn counts of between 60 & 80 are suitable for achieving a good balance between affordability, luxury and high quality.
Always buy ‘single ply’, ‘single pick’
Regarding single-ply 60s yarn fabric, with an average weave ratio of approximately 70% - 80% between threads, it is only possible to achieve around 300-350 threads per square inch for the fabric to be breathable. A higher thread count than this, for this yarn type (60s Yarn Count), indicates that the fabric has most likely been constructed using either multi-ply threads or multi-pick thread insertions – possibly resulting in bed linen of a poorer quality.
Thread counts of between 200 & 350
Avoid bed linen made from a thread count of less than 180-200 as the fabric will be flimsy and be made from coarser yarns, making the bedding less durable. For light, breathable & affordable bed linen, a thread count of between 200 & 350, is suitable. Bed linen made from a thread count of higher than 400 in single ply, single pick fabric – while luxurious – would be more expensive as the threads would be finer and of a higher yarn count (e.g. 80s, 100s or 120s).
The weave and fabric construction ratio
There are two types of weaves: a) a sateen weave & b) a percale weave. A sateen weave gives a soft, smooth, and silk like feel to the material. It has a better drape, and a shiny lustre that exudes luxury.
With a percale weave, the material is crisp with a paper like rustle when ruffled. It has a matte like appearance. Bed linen made using this weave is most suited for warmer climates.
The softness and lustre of the material is also dependent on the weave ratio during fabric construction. Horizontal threads (weft) are woven into the vertical ones (warp) in creating the material. From experience, we believe that an approximate 2:1 weave ratio (warp:weft) gives a good balance in achieving a durable fabric with a beautiful lustre and a luxurious softness.
